Choosing a Mechanic

Choosing a mechanic is an important decision in the ownership of a car. Choosing a incompetent or dishonest could be a terrible decision during the ownership of the car.
Sadly, there are no certifications available to ensure a prospective customer of the quality of service such an outfit offers.
Some dealerships such as Coscharis and RT Briscoe, however offer maintenance services albeit at a premium cost, more often than not, out of the reach of the average Nigerian.
Here's how to go about this process;

Referrals
Speak to some friends about the mechanics they use and their experiences. "Word of mouth" referrals are a great way to start. Additional information to get would be;
i. Car specialisation e.g. Toyota, Honda, Mercedes etc.
ii. Repair fees, They should be affordable and commensurate with the expected job quality.
iii. Availability for rescue jobs in the event of breakdowns.
iv. His reliability and honesty. He must deliver as promised, using genuine parts at true prices.

An assessment visit
Pay a visit to some shops (or a chosen one). Observe certain issues such as;
i. Again, specialisation. No mechanic can know it all. Vehicles from different brands differ greatly in building philosophies. These matter during repairs.
ii. Watch out for present repair jobs. A large number usually represents an uncoordinated workshop, and some dissatisfied customers who have returned their cars. He may also be unable to concentrate and finish a job, this will more than not, lead to errors.
iii. The presence of apprentices.  They may help to run errands. When properly coordinated, they could also help ensure faster turnaround times.
iv. A waiting area for customers for quick repair jobs.
v. An organised work space. Screws and bolts won't end up in the wrong places.

His qualities
Watch out for the following;
i. An organised environment and necessary tools.
ii. Diagnostic tools. Modern cars have computer systems with troubleshooting systems with fault codes and repair suggestions. Guesses should be limited.
iii. A good knowledge of sources for spare parts.
iv. Honesty. He must work within his expertise. He may give referrals to other mechanics.
v. He must be efficient.

Where cost is not a limiting factor, major car dealers offer car repair services. These are available in major cities like Lagos, Ibadan, Benin and Abuja. Their charges are comparatively higher. However, most repairs are warranted. They also offer advanced diagnostic machines and give tips on prolonging the use of cars.
Or just ignore everything above, drive into the nearest shack and learn through painfull experience, when it ends in tears.
